Intention vs. Impact
How to Overcome Defensiveness · Neurodiverse Couples Counseling Center
Defensiveness runs on a double standard almost everyone uses without noticing. We judge ourselves by our intention — what we meant. We judge each other by impact — what actually landed. Both readings are true. Neither one is the whole story.
The way out is not to argue about which one counts. It is for each partner to start with the half they usually skip.
The double standard, and the way out
Example — : Defensiveness — the old pattern · Offender: Judges self by intention. “Why don't you see what I meant?” · Hurt Partner: Judges the other by impact. What landed is what counts.
Example — : Healing — the new move · Offender: Acknowledge impact first. · Hurt Partner: Acknowledge intention first.
Intent is invisible: Reading another person's intention is a guess for everyone, and for many neurodivergent partners it is a guess that is harder to make — not because they care less, but because intention leaves no visible trace. That is why “why don't you see what I meant?” rarely works, and why saying it plainly does.
Go first with the half you skip: Each of you already holds the piece the other is waiting for. If you caused the hurt, name the impact before you explain yourself. If you were hurt, name the intention before you press the impact. Whoever moves first is not conceding — they are starting the repair.
