Autistic burnout is a state of profound physical and mental exhaustion from sustained masking, sensory overload, and navigating a world not designed for autistic people. In women it often looks like sudden loss of the ability to function in previously manageable ways — difficulty speaking, sensory intolerance, withdrawal, and deep fatigue that does not respond to rest. It is frequently misdiagnosed as depression.

Are your therapists autistic themselves?

Yes. Every therapist at She Rocks the Spectrum is both a licensed clinician and an autistic woman. Our therapists have lived the experiences clients bring into the room — the masking, the late identification, the exhaustion of performing neurotypicality. You will not spend your sessions explaining yourself to someone trying to understand from the outside.

Will therapy try to change who I am?

No. We are not here to make you more neurotypical or easier for other people to deal with. We are here to help you understand yourself, reduce the suffering that comes from living in a world not designed for you, and build a life that fits who you actually are. The goal is not to change you. It is to help you stop fighting yourself.

I identify as autistic but have never had a formal assessment. Can I still work with you?

Absolutely. We fully respect self-identification. Many autistic women arrive at an understanding of themselves through their own research and lived experience, long before any clinician recognized it. You do not need a formal assessment to work with us.

I have spent years being treated for anxiety or depression and nothing has worked. Could autism be the missing piece?

For many women, yes. Anxiety, depression, and eating disorders are among the most common misdiagnoses autistic women receive before their autism is recognized. The symptoms are real, but the root cause is not being treated. When the underlying autism is understood and addressed, the picture often shifts meaningfully.

I have ADHD. Could I also be autistic?

Yes, and the overlap is significant. Autism and ADHD co-occur at high rates, and in women this combination is frequently missed because each condition can mask or complicate the other. Do you work with teenagers?

Yes. We work with girls from age 13 and up. Adolescence is a critical time for autistic girls when masking becomes most exhausting and anxiety and burnout often begin. Will therapy actually help my daughter?

Yes. We are not trying to make your daughter more like her neurotypical peers. We are helping her understand herself, reduce the suffering from chronic masking, build genuine confidence, and develop tools that work for how her brain operates. The goal is not to change who she is. It is to help her thrive as who she is.

I have always struggled socially but I have friends and can hold a conversation. How could I be autistic?

The picture of autism most people carry does not describe most autistic women. Many autistic women are highly verbal and able to maintain friendships. What is invisible is the enormous effort behind it — the scripting, rehearsal, and recovery time. Having friends does not mean you are not autistic. It may mean you have been working very hard for a very long time.
