Repair After a Misstep

Sometimes sex goes sideways — someone said the wrong thing, sensory overload hit, dissociation, RSD spiral, anatomy didn't cooperate, or the moment broke. The misstep itself is normal. What couples do next determines whether the relationship grows or quietly contracts. This worksheet walks the repair.

Safety note: This worksheet is for consensual relationships where both partners can say yes, no, wait, or stop without punishment. Do not use this worksheet to pressure sexual activity. If there is fear, coercion, retaliation, active abuse, trauma flooding, pain, shutdown, or dissociation, pause and use this with a qualified therapist.

How to use this worksheet

Wait until you're both regulated. Hours or days. Don't repair while raw. Each fill out your own copy. Privately. Curiosity, not blame. Share what you wrote. Whoever feels less raw goes first. Make a small specific repair plan — what we will try differently.

The repair — five steps, in order

1 — Name what happened

Stick to specifics. 'I went silent and pulled away after you said X.' Not 'You always make me feel Y.'

2 — Name what you needed

What did you actually need in that moment? A pause? A word? Touch? Space? Be specific.

3 — Name what you imagined your partner felt

Then ask if you got it right. (You probably didn't get it all right — that's the work.)

4 — Acknowledge the part you played (when safe)

Even small things. 'I checked out before saying anything.' 'I assumed instead of asking.'

Safety first: If there was coercion, pressure, boundary crossing, or fear, do not force mutual responsibility. Safety comes before repair.

5 — Make a small repair plan

ONE specific thing to try differently next time. Not a list. One thing.
