Telling People (Or Not)

Disclosing that you're autistic is always your choice — every time, with every person. There's no obligation to tell anyone, and 'not yet' is a complete answer. This helps you think it through for the people and places that are on your mind.

Your information, your call: You can disclose fully, partly ('I get overwhelmed by noise' without a label), or not at all. None of these is more honest than the others.

If you decide to tell them

You don't owe a long explanation. A short, calm sentence is often enough.

Example: 'I wanted to share that I'm autistic. It mostly means I do better with clear plans and a heads-up before changes — nothing you need to do differently, but it helps to know.'

Either way is fine: Choosing privacy is not hiding, and choosing to share is not oversharing. You're allowed to decide differently with different people.
