What Money Feels Like
That freeze when you go to open the banking app isn't you being irresponsible. It's your nervous system flinching from something that's come to feel like a verdict on your worth. Avoidance isn't the problem here - it's the coping. This is a place to make money feel a little less like a threat.
Go gently: There are no scores here and nothing to get right. If this stirs a lot up, put it down and come back - or bring it to a therapist. Money feelings run deep, and slow is fine.
My money-body reactions
These are threat responses, not character. Check what shows up.
- [ ] Dread before checking balances
- [ ] Avoiding bills or mail
- [ ] Panic or shutdown
- [ ] Numbness
- [ ] Over-checking
- [ ] A knot when money comes up
Guilt vs. shame
Guilt points at a fixable thing. Shame just crushes.
Example — Shame says: I'm a mess who can't be trusted with money · The guilt-version that's true and fixable: I forgot to pay it - I'll set an alarm
Row 2
- Shame says: ____________________
- The guilt-version that's true and fixable: ____________________
The shame sentence I say to myself - and the truer, fixable guilt-version:
______________________________________________
______________________________________________
The avoidance loop
Shame leads to avoiding, avoiding leads to a consequence, the consequence feeds more shame.
Where I get stuck in that loop:
______________________________________________
______________________________________________
A gentler first step
Shame loses power the moment money is looked at safely, in small doses.
The smallest money thing I could face this week, with kindness:
______________________________________________
______________________________________________
Support
Shame thrives in secrecy; naming money to one safe person drains it.
One safe person or resource I could bring this to:
______________________________________________
You're allowed to be gentle here: Money got tangled up with your worth somewhere along the way - untangling it is slow, kind work. A financial therapist can help if the feelings run deep. You are not your bank balance.
